Bediüzzaman’s Message to the Martyrs: Eternal Life and Divine Reward

Martyrdom in Islam: The Highest Rank
Those who sacrifice their lives for their homeland, nation, honor, and faith are promised eternal bliss, as conveyed in the Holy Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). In Islam, martyrdom is considered the highest rank after prophethood, and those who attain this status do not experience the pain of death but are instead rewarded with the blessings of paradise.

Martyrs Are Not Dead
The Quran explicitly states that martyrs are not dead but alive in the presence of Allah. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:154) affirms this truth:

"And do not say of those who are killed in the way of Allah, 'They are dead.' Rather, they are alive, but you perceive it not."

Bediüzzaman Said Nursî, in his Risale-i Nur collection, explains that martyrs continue to live in the Barzakh (intermediate realm) in a manner similar to worldly life but free from pain and suffering. They do not feel the agony of separation that accompanies death; rather, they experience divine bliss in their new existence.

Bediüzzaman further elaborates on this concept:

"Because they have sacrificed their worldly lives for the path of truth, Allah grants them a life resembling their earthly one but without sorrow and hardship in the Barzakh realm. They do not perceive themselves as dead but instead believe they have transitioned to a better existence, filled with ultimate happiness."

Prophet Muhammad’s Glad Tidings for Martyrs
According to the hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas (ra), Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) described how the martyrs of the Battle of Uhud were placed in the bodies of green birds, drinking from paradise rivers, eating its fruits, and residing under the divine throne. When they saw the beauty of their new existence, they wished for their fellow believers to know of their rewards so that they, too, would not hesitate in jihad.

Forgiveness and Divine Mercy for Martyrs
Islamic teachings affirm that all sins of a martyr are forgiven except for debts owed to others. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) stated that even those who sincerely desire martyrdom will attain its reward, even if they die peacefully in their beds.
