ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Dreaming of thorns is traditionally interpreted by Islamic scholars and dream analysts as a representation of a harsh, difficult person, or as a symbol of the spiritual and financial obstacles one faces in life. The specific nature of the dream—whether one is pricked by a thorn or simply observing them—serves as a crucial indicator of the dreamer's upcoming challenges or social interactions.
Traditional Islamic perspectives on thorns
Islamic scholars have historically viewed thorns through a lens of moral character and social consequence, often linking them to ignorance or discord.
-
Ihya: Thorns represent a person with a crude and harsh nature or someone who follows misguided beliefs. Sitting on thorns suggests a state of constant anxiety, while being dragged over them indicates being under heavy pressure from creditors.
-
Molla Cami: According to Cami, thorns signify a man of violence or a person advocating for "fitna" (discord). He notes that because of their sharpness, thorns can represent physical pain or illness, while their tangled nature suggests a stagnation in business affairs.
-
Nablusi: Nablusi equates thorns with a harsh man or a harmful innovation in faith. He suggests that a prick from a thorn indicates that the dreamer will be disturbed by something they dislike or fall into a period of social trial.
-
Diyanet: In Diyanet’s interpretations, thorns are a direct metaphor for a stern and fierce individual. To be pricked by one is a warning of an impending nuisance or a malicious rumor affecting the dreamer.
Interpretations of debt and hardship
Many classical scholars focus on the material implications of thorns, particularly concerning financial obligations and interpersonal conflicts.
Imam Jafer Sadiq (a.s) categorized the appearance of thorns into three distinct meanings:
-
Financial debt
-
Hostility or enmity
-
Difficulties regarding one's profession or work
Kirmani offers a nuanced view, stating that if a dreamer is pricked by many thorns but feels no pain, it indicates they carry significant debt but will manage to pay it off entirely without suffering harm. Conversely, if you dream of pricking someone else, it suggests you will lend money to that person but will also wound them with harsh words.
Psychological and contemporary views
Modern interpretations often shift the focus toward emotional health and romantic relationships, viewing the thorn as a protective yet painful barrier.
Contemporary Scholars suggest that seeing thorns may indicate trouble in love affairs. While being wounded by a thorn might represent the end of a friendship, some modern analysts interpret self-inflicted thorn wounds as a paradoxical sign of future happiness in a marital relationship.
Furthermore, wearing a crown of thorns is frequently seen as a symbol of psychological distress or a "martyr complex," where the individual feels overwhelmed by the burdens they carry for others.
