The Deepest Layer of Dream Interpretation: Whose Dreams Are Valid, and Whose Are Not?
DREAMS WISDOM / DREAMSWISDOM.COM
Dreams have fascinated humankind for millennia. But are all dreams created equal? Insights compiled by the humble servant Muhammad Baqir ibn Muhammad Taqi (may Allah reunite them with the immaculate Imams of Ahl al-Bayt) based on reputable narrations and hadiths reveal that dream interpretations vary significantly depending on the individual.
Whose Dreams Are Interpretable?
Believing and Pious Women:
Only the dreams of faithful and devout women are deemed worthy of interpretation. Due to their spiritual purity, these dreams are considered more significant than those of others.
Generous and Wealthy Individuals:
People known for their generosity and financial stability are also believed to have more meaningful dreams. A hadith stating "the miser shall not enter Paradise" underscores that stinginess may reflect spiritual deprivation, affecting the quality of dreams.
Whose Dreams Are Not Interpreted?
The Poor Who Complain of Their Condition:
Dreams of those who constantly lament their poverty are not interpreted. Their dreams are often clouded by mental and emotional preoccupations related to financial hardship.
People with Excess Blood (Sanguine Imbalance):
If individuals with high blood levels see medications or syrups before sleeping, their dreams are attributed to biological effects and are therefore invalid.
Those with Jaundice or Weak Health:
People with jaundice or frailty who consume garlic, lentils, or beans and then dream of light, lamps, or torches should consider such imagery as mere physiological responses.
Phlegmatic Individuals:
Those who consume dairy or similar fluids and then dream of water-related imagery like seas or snow may have dreams influenced by bodily fluids, especially if they are emotionally distressed.
Emotionally Disturbed or Heartbroken Individuals:
Dreams of those tormented by love, enmity, or emotional trauma—especially dreams depicting themselves between two seas or rivers—are not suitable for interpretation due to their psychological turbulence.
Children's Dreams: Innocence or Irrelevance?
There are two scholarly opinions:
-
Since children have pure hearts, their dreams are considered close to the truth.
-
Due to their lack of maturity, children’s dreams are not taken seriously.
However, dreams of children approaching puberty are interpreted through their parents. Negative dreams seen by children are not considered harmful.
Other Categories of Valid Dreams
Jews, Alcohol Users, Menstruating or Impure Individuals:
Dreams seen by non-believers or those in states of ritual impurity can still be valid. Being in sin or disbelief does not always invalidate a dream's meaning.
Dreams That Come True: A Notable Example
Some dreams manifest quickly in real life. One classical narrative involves Safiyyah, daughter of Hayy ibn Akhtab, wife of the chief of Khaybar. She dreamt that the sun and moon fell into her lap. Upon telling her husband, she was struck and insulted. Just three days later, Khaybar was conquered, and Safiyyah became the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who remarked:
"That was the interpretation of your dream."
Every Dream Is Unique to the Dreamer
As people differ in temperament, character, and speech, so do their dreams. Each dream must be interpreted based on the individual's emotional state, physical health, life circumstances, and personal context.
