The Spiritual Keys to Waking Up for Nightly Prayers

For many who seek to deepen their spiritual connection, waking up at a specific hour of the night for worship, known as Tahajjud in Islam, is a cherished practice. However, the modern world's demands often make this a challenge. Islamic tradition, as chronicled in revered texts, offers profound guidance in the form of specific prayers and Quranic verses to aid believers in this spiritual endeavor. These practices, passed down through prophetic wisdom and scholarly works, provide a path to not only awaken the body but also to attune the soul to a higher purpose.

Guidance from the Prophet and Imams

According to a narration in Usul-u Kafi, Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) relates from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) a concise yet powerful prayer for those wishing to wake at a particular time. The prayer, which can be recited before sleep, is as follows:

"O Allah, do not make me secure from Your plan, and do not make me forget Your remembrance, and do not make me among the heedless. I shall rise, God willing, at such and such an hour."

Allâhumme lâ tu'minnî mekrak ve lâ tunsinî zikrak ve lâ tec'-alnî minel ğafilîn, equmu inşâ'allâhu sâ'ate kezâ ve kezâ.

It is said that whoever recites this prayer, Allah tasks an angel with the duty of awakening them at the requested time. Felahu's-Sail offers a more comprehensive prayer from Imam Musa al-Kadhim (peace be upon him), which includes not only the request to be awakened but also seeks to be blessed with prayer, gratitude, and supplication.

The Power of Quranic Verses

In addition to prayers, specific verses from the Quran are recommended to help a person awaken at a desired time. Felahu's-Sail records a narration from Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) who advised reciting the final verse of Surah Al-Kahf (18:110) before sleeping:

"Say, 'I am only a man like you, to whom it has been revealed that your God is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.'"

The narration states that the light from this verse illuminates the path to the Ka'bah, and angels pray for the forgiveness of the one who recites it. A similar tradition suggests reciting a verse from Surah Al-Baqarah (2:125) also serves this purpose.

Unconventional Methods and Spiritual Protection

Certain traditions, as documented in Havassu'l-Ayat, propose unique, symbolic methods. For instance, it is said that to help someone who struggles to wake up, one can write a set of verses from Surah Ali ‘Imran (3:190-194) on a wooden plate, wash it with Zamzam water, and have the person drink that water. This is believed to grant them the ability to awaken at their desired time. These verses also carry a profound message for spiritual purification, as reciting them continuously is said to cleanse the heart from hatred and enmity, and to strengthen one's faith. Additionally, the final verse of Surah Al-Kahf is also mentioned as a source of protection from fear and from the Antichrist (Dajjal), a figure of great tribulation in Islamic eschatology.
