Two Striking Dreams from History

Throughout Islamic history, dreams have often been seen as gateways to truth or warnings of fate. Two remarkable accounts—one prophetic, the other tragic—offer powerful insight into the depth and seriousness once accorded to dream interpretation.

A Blackened Face, a Divine Clue

Mehdi ibn Mansur, a statesman from the Abbasid era, once dreamt that his face had turned black. Troubled, he summoned expert dream interpreters, but none could provide a convincing explanation. Then one advisor suggested bringing in Ibrahim ibn Abdullah al-Kirmani, a renowned interpreter from Kerman. When Kirmani heard the dream, his reply was swift and confident: “You will have a daughter.”

The audience was stunned by the clarity and speed of the interpretation. Asked for his reasoning, Kirmani quoted from the Qur’an: “When one of them is informed of the birth of a female, his face darkens and he suppresses his grief.” (Surah al-Nahl, 16:58)

That very day, Mehdi’s daughter was born—confirming Kirmani’s reading. In gratitude, Mehdi rewarded him with ten thousand dirhams, followed by an additional thousand.

This event highlights the profound symbolic knowledge that true dream interpreters possessed and the seriousness with which such visions were regarded in classical Islamic society.

A Severed Organ and the Collapse of a Life

Another dramatic story centers on a man who dreamed his genitalia had been severed. Seeking answers, he consulted several interpreters, each offering different—often grim—predictions. Some warned of impending death, others suggested loss of status, wealth, lineage, or marriage.

Not long after, he divorced his wife and embarked on a sea voyage with his children for a business venture. A violent storm struck their ship. It capsized. He and his children drowned, and all his wealth was lost to the sea. In a final eerie twist, a shark devoured the man’s severed organ.

This chilling tale demonstrates how some dreams can transcend metaphor and manifest in real-world tragedies. The symbolism proved tragically literal, marking the loss of family, fortune, and ultimately life.

Choose Your Audience Wisely

Not all dreams are meant to be shared widely. Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq once warned: “A dream is not altered by the ignorance of others, but still, do not seek interpretations from four types: the faithless, the ignorant, women, and enemies. There is no benefit in sharing dreams with them.”

This counsel reflects a deeper truth: interpretations depend not just on the dream itself, but on who hears it. Just as a skilled physician diagnoses by looking beyond symptoms, a true interpreter must understand the dreamer's context—spiritual, emotional, and societal.
