The general symbolism of a flowing fountain

At its core, a fountain represents the source from which a person draws their livelihood and spiritual nourishment. Seeing a beautifully constructed fountain, especially one with continuously flowing, clear water, is universally considered an excellent omen.

It signifies a life free from anxiety, long-lasting health, and a steady stream of blessings. If a person dreams of drinking sweet, clear water directly from a fountain using their hands, it suggests they will be rewarded with goodness and blessings in both this world and the hereafter. Furthermore, getting wet from the fountain's water while drinking indicates that the dreamer is earning the pleasure of Allah through their charitable acts.

The condition of the water dictates the meaning

The quality and behavior of the water are crucial to the interpretation. A fountain gushing with clean water signifies that the dreamer's life will be as pure, sweet, and abundant as the water itself. Filling a container with clear water points to impending wealth.

Conversely, filling a container with muddy or murky water is a stern warning, indicating that the dreamer may soon face severe financial hardship or fall into poverty. If the water tastes bitter or if there is a warning sign saying "Do not drink," it portends minor illnesses, life disruptions, or obstacles that need to be carefully navigated. A completely dry or ruined fountain is interpreted negatively, often symbolizing a shortened lifespan, financial ruin, or severe distress.

Interpretations by renowned Islamic Scholars

Eminent scholars have provided highly detailed interpretations regarding the size, ownership, and specific interactions with fountains and large water basins (şadırvan).

Ibn Sirin's Interpretation

Ibn Sirin explicitly connects the fountain to one's religious life and overall destiny. He states that seeing a beautiful, perfect fountain whose owner is unknown means the dreamer will attain great honor, live a beautiful life, possess abundant sustenance, and enjoy a long life. If the dreamer realizes the beautiful fountain belongs to them, these blessings are multiplied, and they will earn great spiritual reward (thawab).

However, Ibn Sirin also provides warnings regarding the size of the fountain. A very small fountain indicates a meager livelihood. If the dreamer is walking around a fountain, it suggests that the remaining part of their life is shorter than the part they have already lived.

Imam Nablusi's Interpretation

Imam Nablusi interprets the fountain as a symbol of a charitable, benevolent, and generous person. A public mosque fountain represents a just and generous ruler or administrator in that region. A fountain inside a house points to the generosity of the homeowner.

Nablusi also notes that seeing people perform ablution (wudu) from a fountain means the public will benefit greatly from the justice and charity of their leaders. If the water overflows, the wealth of the generous person it represents will increase; if it dries up, that person will become impoverished.

Diyanet's Interpretation

The Diyanet focuses on the pursuit of knowledge and personal life stages. According to their interpretation, if a person wants to drink but cannot find a cup at the fountain, it means they are passionately chasing a specific field of knowledge. Finding the cup signifies they will successfully acquire that knowledge.

Regarding colors, Diyanet states that a black fountain signifies impending grief; a yellow one denotes sickness; and a white one represents blessings and halal (permissible) earnings.

Danyal's (a.s.) Interpretation

The Prophet Danyal (a.s.), as cited in classical dream texts, provides a direct correlation between the fountain's size and the dreamer's fortune: the larger the fountain, the more auspicious the dream, indicating a long life and excellent livelihood. Interestingly, he states that carrying a fountain on one's back means the dreamer will be entrusted with the heavy responsibilities and trusts of the public.

Cabir'ül Mağribi and Ismail El Eş'as

Cabir'ül Mağribi introduces color symbolism, where a green fountain means goodness and blessings, while red points to worldly affairs. Ismail El Eş'as offers a unique perspective: if a person is talking to someone and tears a fountain from the wall and holds it, they will be protected from all kinds of evil. If the person they are speaking to is deceased, it guarantees a very long life for the dreamer.
