NEW YORK, USA — Seeing an enemy in a dream is interpreted through blocked affairs, sorrow, financial loss, friendship, victory, secrecy, moral caution and inner struggle.
In Islamic dream interpretation, the enemy is not always a direct sign of a real-life opponent. Sometimes it represents an actual adversary, sometimes the dreamer’s own ego, hidden fears, social conflict, jealousy, secrecy or a matter that requires caution. Fighting an enemy, being defeated by an enemy, becoming friends with an enemy, being threatened by an enemy or seeing an enemy enter a place all carry different meanings.
General meaning of seeing an enemy in a dream
Seeing an enemy in a dream may carry both warning and favorable meanings depending on the details. In some sources, an enemy indicates blocked affairs, sorrow, hardship and loss in wealth. In other interpretations, seeing an enemy may indicate that the dreamer’s rank will rise, that they will be supported by God and that they will overcome those who oppose them.
This variety shows that enemy dreams should not be interpreted from one angle only. The most important questions are: Who is the enemy? Is the dreamer fighting them? Does the enemy defeat the dreamer? Does the enemy become friendly? Does the dreamer feel fear, patience or strength?
An enemy dream may also warn the dreamer to be careful in social and business relationships. The person may need to avoid revealing secrets, sharing plans too early or trusting others without caution.
Imam Jafar al-Sadiq’s interpretation
According to Imam Jafar al-Sadiq, seeing an enemy in a dream has three main interpretations: blocked affairs, sorrow and hardship, and loss in wealth. This interpretation focuses on the difficult side of enemy symbolism.
Blocked affairs may mean that a matter the dreamer is expecting will be delayed, closed or interrupted. A door that seemed open may temporarily close, or a project may become more difficult.
Sorrow and hardship point to the emotional burden of such a dream. The dreamer may be living through rivalry, fear, conflict or distrust in waking life. The dream may reflect a tense situation that needs attention.
Loss in wealth may indicate financial disappointment, business loss, a failed expectation or harm caused by someone the dreamer trusted. For this reason, the dream advises caution in money, partnership, trade and trust-based dealings.
Ibn Sirin on fighting an enemy
According to Ibn Sirin, if a person sees themselves fighting an enemy and the enemy defeats them, this points to a trial or calamity. In this situation, giving charity and repentance are advised.
Being defeated by an enemy does not only mean losing against a real person. The dreamer may be losing against their own ego, anger, fear, wrong decisions or harmful influences around them. The dream may be a warning to regain control, review mistakes and seek spiritual protection.
The recommendation of charity and repentance is important in classical dream interpretation. It shows that the dream should not only be understood as fear, but also as an opportunity to correct one’s state, seek forgiveness and take protective spiritual measures.
Molla Cami’s interpretation of the enemy
According to Molla Cami, seeing an enemy in a dream may indicate that the dreamer’s value and rank are high, that they will be supported by God and that they will defeat their enemies. This shows that enemy dreams are not always negative.
If a person sees someone acting as an enemy toward them, they may become friends with that person. This is an example of opposite interpretation, where dream hostility may indicate waking friendship.
However, if an enemy frightens someone with something bad in a dream, harm may come to that person from the enemy. If the dreamer gives advice to the enemy, the enemy may betray them. These interpretations suggest that the details of interaction matter greatly.
Seeing one’s enemy captured may seem like victory, but Molla Cami interprets it as a sign of severe sorrow. This shows that dream victory may sometimes carry hidden emotional weight.
Diyanet-style interpretation: friendship with an enemy
According to Diyanet-style interpretation, if a person sees themselves meeting and becoming friends with someone they have long known as an enemy, it means they should proceed with a planned matter without revealing secrets.
This dream advises caution. The dreamer should not open their private plans to everyone and should act carefully in sensitive matters.
In this interpretation, friendship with an enemy does not simply mean reconciliation. It may point to the need for discretion, privacy and strategic silence. The dreamer may be entering a situation where careless speech could cause harm.
This interpretation is especially relevant for business plans, family matters, inheritance, legal issues, partnerships and financial decisions.
Nabulsi’s interpretation: victory, warning and hidden meanings
According to Nabulsi, seeing an enemy in a dream indicates that the dreamer’s value may rise above stubborn and opposing people, that they may be supported by God and that they may overcome their enemies.
If someone acts with hostility toward the dreamer in a dream, the dreamer may become friends with that person. If the enemy frightens the dreamer with something bad, some interpretations say the dreamer may receive good. If the enemy promises something good, harm may come from that enemy. This makes the dream’s language indirect and symbolic.
Nabulsi says that giving advice to an enemy may indicate betrayal from that enemy. Seeing an enemy enter a place may indicate flood or heavy rain in that place. Seeing enemy horses running around a city may also indicate rain, flood or similar events.
If a person sees themselves left as a pledge or hostage with the enemy, this may indicate gaining sins and being held accountable for them. This interpretation connects the enemy dream with spiritual responsibility and moral warning.
Ihya interpretation: the enemy may represent the ego
Ihya-style interpretations treat enemy dreams from many angles. Seeing someone as an enemy may indicate future friendship with that person. Being frightened by an enemy may indicate reaching good. If the enemy does good, it may indicate deception or trickery.
Taking an enemy as a pledge may point to committing sins. Seeing an enemy enter a place may indicate heavy rain. Escaping from the enemy may indicate a change in character and manners.
One of the most important meanings in Ihya is that the enemy may represent the dreamer’s own ego. In this case, the dream is not mainly about another person but about inner struggle. The enemy may symbolize anger, arrogance, desire, envy, pride, weakness or harmful tendencies.
Surrounding the enemy may indicate persistence in work, watching enemies carefully or overcoming them. Being an enemy to the enemies of God indicates righteous deeds and religious awareness. Being an enemy to the friends of God and Muslims indicates turning away from the Book and the Sunnah.
Seeing hostility in a dream
Seeing hostility in a dream is often interpreted by its opposite. According to Diyanet-style interpretation, if a person sees hostility between themselves and another person, friendship and affection may arise between them.
However, if two people who are enemies in waking life see themselves making peace in a dream, their hostility may become stronger. This shows that reconciliation in a dream does not always mean reconciliation in reality.
According to Nabulsi, seeing oneself showing hostility toward another person may indicate loving that person, becoming friends with them and revealing their hidden condition. Hostility can also indicate the disclosure of secrets.
Hostility among enemies in a dream may point to peace. Hostility among people who are at peace may indicate evil, severity and discord. Sometimes hostility in a dream may also indicate the cancellation of a matter.
Sayyid Suleyman and Abu Sa’id al-Wa’iz
According to Sayyid Suleyman, seeing hostility in a dream indicates love and friendship. This again shows that hostility symbolism is often reversed in dream language.
Abu Sa’id al-Wa’iz says that seeing hostility between oneself and another person points to future affection and friendship between them. Some interpreters add that if the dreamer sees hostility with someone and patiently defends themselves in a good manner, they may establish a sincere and clean friendship with that person.
However, seeing two people who are enemies reconcile in a dream may indicate that their hostility will intensify. This interpretation reminds the dreamer not to take every symbol at face value.
Enemy dreams and secrecy
One of the strongest practical messages of enemy dreams is caution in speech and secrecy. If the dream shows an enemy becoming friendly, entering one’s space or being involved in a planned matter, it may advise the dreamer to protect their private affairs.
Not every secret should be shared. Not every plan should be spoken aloud before it is mature. The dream may be warning the person to act quietly, especially in matters involving money, business, family tension, legal issues or partnerships.
This does not mean the dreamer should become suspicious of everyone. It means that trust should be measured, and sensitive matters should be handled with wisdom.
Short interpretation
Seeing an enemy in a dream may indicate blocked affairs, sorrow, hardship, financial disappointment, friendship, secrecy, victory, inner struggle and spiritual warning. Imam Jafar al-Sadiq interprets enemy dreams through blocked affairs, sorrow and loss in wealth. Ibn Sirin says that being defeated by an enemy warns of a trial and advises charity and repentance.
Molla Cami and Nabulsi say that seeing an enemy may also indicate the dreamer’s rank rising, divine support and victory over enemies. Seeing hostility is often interpreted by its opposite and may point to future friendship, affection or love.
If an enemy promises good, it may indicate deception. If an enemy frightens the dreamer, some interpretations read it as a sign of good. Giving advice to an enemy may indicate betrayal. The correct meaning depends on who the enemy is, what happens in the dream, whether the dreamer fears or resists, and the overall feeling of the dream.
