Are All Dreams Worth Interpreting?

Throughout history, dreams have been viewed as spiritual messages, subconscious signals, or prophetic signs. But not every dream holds truth or meaning. According to traditional dream interpreters, certain dreams stem from physical imbalances or environmental triggers—and should not be interpreted at all.

Four Bodily States, Four Dream Patterns

Classical Islamic dream science outlines four major bodily influences that shape the character and reliability of a dream: blood, yellow bile (safra), phlegm, and black bile (melancholia).

  1. Excess blood may lead to dreams featuring red imagery, music, wine, sweet foods, and luxurious scenes. If a person appears overly joyful without cause and has flushed cheeks, the dream is likely rooted in a biological imbalance and holds no symbolic value.

  2. Dominance of yellow bile, often from spicy or hot foods like garlic and onions, results in dreams involving fire, lamps, or extremes of temperature. If the dreamer has visible signs of jaundice and high energy, the dream should not be interpreted.

  3. Increased phlegm, from dairy products or cold, moist foods, produces dreams of snow, rain, moisture, and excess whiteness. A dreamer with slow speech and puffy cheeks is typically influenced by this imbalance.

  4. Melancholic dominance, triggered by consumption of fried meat, pickles, or eggplant, results in visions of snakes, scorpions, darkness, or heavy emotions. Pale or anxious dreamers with dark facial tones are considered affected, and their dreams invalid for interpretation.

The Interpreter’s Responsibility

An experienced dream interpreter must carefully assess the physical and emotional state of the dreamer before offering any interpretation. If one of the four imbalances is present, the dream should be dismissed. Otherwise, a meaningful interpretation may follow.

Caution from Ibn Sirin

The famed dream scholar Ibn Sirin warned against misinterpreting emotionally charged or occupational dreams. If a blacksmith dreams of working with iron, or a lover sees their beloved, these may simply reflect waking concerns. The interpreter should ask what the dreamer ate before sleep and what thoughts they carried into slumber.

When the Sleeping Environment Shapes the Dream

Environmental influences can fabricate dream content. For instance, someone sleeping uncovered in the cold may dream of snow and ice, while someone deeply bundled might find themselves in a steaming bathhouse. These dreams arise from physical conditions and are not spiritually or psychologically symbolic.

Dreams Triggered by Physical Needs

Dreams may also echo physical urgencies—such as pain or the need to urinate. These experiences are categorized under “confused dreams” in classical texts and are not open to interpretation. According to dream science, true dreams require mental clarity, spiritual calm, and a balanced body.
