How individual identity and timing impact dream accuracy
Discover how a person's character, profession, and the specific time of night influence the truthfulness and realization period of their dreams.
DREAMS WISDOM / CHICAGO, USA — DEC. 31, 2025
The reliability of a dream is deeply intertwined with the dreamer's personal character and the specific hour the vision occurs, according to the foundational teachings of Ibn Sirin and Imam Jafar Sadiq.
Classical dream science suggests that the dreams of those who uphold justice, such as judges and scholars, carry a higher degree of truthfulness due to their spiritual responsibilities. Furthermore, the timing of a dream acts as a crucial indicator for its realization; while daytime dreams often manifest within days, those seen in the deep of night may take years—or even decades—to come to fruition.
The hierarchy of dreamers and accuracy
According to the master interpreter Ibn Sirin, dreams are categorized by the dreamer's state of being. The visions of the righteous (Salih) are considered significantly more accurate than those of the transgressors, as the former strive for truth in their waking lives. Historical evidence also suggests that the dreams of elders are generally more reliable than those of the youth, whose visions may be clouded by worldly desires. Notably, the dreams of children are often interpreted as reflections of their parents' lives, as the young are considered spiritually pure and free from worldly sin.
Timing: When will a dream come true?
The realization period of a dream varies significantly based on when it was seen. Imam Jafar Sadiq (AS) provides a framework for understanding these timeframes:
-
Daytime Dreams: These are often realized quickly, sometimes within a few days.
-
Deep Night Dreams: These may take six months to twenty years to manifest. A primary example is Prophet Joseph’s dream, which took two decades to materialize.
-
Early Night: Visions seen in the first hours of sleep are rarely symbolic, as they are often just reflections of the day's thoughts.
-
Pre-Dawn (Seher): Dreams occurring just before dawn or as the sky begins to lighten are regarded as the most accurate, as they are believed to be shown by angels from the "Preserved Tablet."
Reading the soul: The expertise of Ibn Sirin
The art of interpretation requires more than just knowing symbols; it involves "reading" the person. A famous anecdote describes Ibn Sirin giving two different meanings to the same dream of "reciting the Call to Prayer." For one man, he predicted a journey to Hajj, while for the other, he predicted an accusation of theft. He explained that his interpretation was based on the "inner light" and facial expressions of the individuals. This underscores that a true interpreter must evaluate the spiritual state of the dreamer alongside the dream itself to provide an accurate reading.
