ANKARA, TURKEY — Dreaming of a horse in Islamic interpretation may symbolize one’s wish, rank, provision, travel, honor, victory over enemies, marriage, children, wealth and reputation.
Islamic scholars interpret horse dreams according to many details: whether the dreamer rides the horse, owns it, buys it, sells it, falls from it, changes horses, sees a mare or a foal, or notices the horse’s color and behavior. A calm, beautiful and well-equipped horse usually carries meanings of honor and elevation, while a wild, bridgeless or saddleless horse may warn of unstable affairs, loss of control or harmful relationships.
General meaning of seeing a horse in a dream
In Islamic dream interpretation, the horse often represents the dreamer’s desire, ambition and worldly aim. Seeing a horse near oneself may indicate expanded provision, strength and victory over enemies.
A horse is also a symbol of rank, dignity and movement. Riding a horse may point to elevation in status, marriage, public honor or travel. Even if a person is not normally fit to ride a horse, seeing himself riding one may indicate that he gains rank and dignity.
Seeing a horse from a distance is interpreted as good news, honor and goodness. It may point to a future blessing, a coming opportunity or a wish that begins to approach the dreamer.
Some interpreters also connect the horse with fame and reputation. A strong, noble and beautiful horse may therefore indicate that the dreamer becomes respected among people or gains a known position.
According to Ihya: rank, travel and victory
In Ihya-style Islamic interpretation, the horse is linked with rank, position, travel and victory over enemies. Seeing a horse may indicate that the dreamer rises in worldly standing, becomes stronger in his affairs and overcomes opposition.
A horse whose tail, mane and feet are reddish may symbolize religious devotion. This shows that a horse dream is not always only about worldly rank; in some cases, it may also point to spiritual sincerity and religious steadiness.
A horse may also symbolize a well-built house. In this sense, it represents stability, dignity, shelter and the dreamer’s ordered worldly life.
Owning many horses may indicate becoming distinguished among colleagues and peers. If a man riding a horse has a pregnant wife, the dream may point to the birth of a son.
Nabulsi: provision, honor and protection
According to Imam Nabulsi, seeing a horse beside oneself points to expanded provision and victory over enemies. In this interpretation, the horse becomes a symbol of both livelihood and protection.
Riding a male horse may mean being protected from one’s enemy. Riding a foal may indicate that the dreamer will have a beautiful child. Riding a saddled animal may point to a moderate life: neither poor nor extremely wealthy.
For an unmarried person, riding a mare may indicate marriage to a noble, wealthy and respected woman. The mare is often interpreted as a woman of dignity and status.
If a person rides someone else’s horse, he may rise to that person’s rank, follow his path or adopt his habits. This is especially true if the horse is known and famous, and the dreamer is worthy of riding it.
Molla Cami: riding, falling and the horse’s condition
Molla Cami interprets riding a horse as reaching an honorable rank or going on a journey, especially for someone who is worthy of riding in real life.
Seeing a young and fine-bred horse may indicate increased strength and expanded provision. A pale gray horse may point to pursuing profitable work, while an old dark red or ash-colored horse may warn of disruption in affairs.
Riding a horse without a bridle may indicate being forced under someone else’s command, even against one’s will. Riding a wild or unruly horse may point to contact with a deceitful or lying person and harm coming through that relationship.
Riding without a saddle may indicate that the dreamer does not obtain good results from the matters he begins. Falling from a horse may point to financial loss or weakened health, while being bitten by a horse may indicate respect and attention from people.
Diyanet-style interpretation: color, marriage and authority
In Diyanet-style interpretations, the meaning of a horse depends strongly on its color and form. A black horse may indicate greatness and wealth. A fine-bred horse may point to increased provision and strength.
A whitish horse may mean pursuing profitable work. A red or ash-colored horse may indicate that some affairs become disturbed. Riding a gray horse may suggest victory over enemies.
Riding a horse may also be interpreted as marriage. If an unmarried person rides a foal, the dream may point to marriage with a wealthy and good woman or buying a house.
Buying a horse from the market may indicate rapid promotion for a person in public service. A male horse symbolizes power and authority, while a female horse points to a noble and respected woman.
Mare, foal and male horse
A mare is usually interpreted as a noble woman. If an unmarried man rides a mare, he may marry a respected, wealthy and well-born woman. If the mare has a foal, the meaning of family, children and growth becomes stronger.
Riding a foal may indicate a beautiful child. For an unmarried person, it may also point to marriage or obtaining a house. The foal symbolizes youth, a new beginning, offspring and hope for the future.
A male horse is associated with authority, power and protection. Riding a male horse may indicate protection from enemies and the gaining of rank.
If a horse dies in the dreamer’s house or near him, this may point to the death of a person. If a mare dies, is stolen or becomes lost, it may indicate a matter affecting the wife or livelihood.
Horse colors in Islamic dream interpretation
The color of the horse is one of the most important details. A white horse is connected with victory over enemies and goodness. A horse whose whiteness is stronger than its blackness may indicate a religious woman or honorable authority.
A black horse symbolizes dignity, honor, wealth, authority, state power and greatness. Riding a black horse may indicate travel, benefit, increased rank or strong reputation.
A chestnut or bay horse may symbolize strength, joy and honor. A dark bay horse may point to great blessing and high rank. A reddish horse may indicate religious safety and honor through authority.
A yellowish horse may indicate illness. A gray horse may point to great goodness, rank and victory over enemies. An iron-gray horse may sometimes symbolize fame, while some interpreters see it as difficulty and rejection in affairs.
Riding, dismounting and changing horses
Riding a horse generally points to elevation, honor, marriage, rank or travel. If the dreamer is worthy of riding, the meaning becomes stronger and may indicate a valuable position.
Dismounting from a horse may indicate leaving a position, changing one’s state or turning away from a matter. Dismounting from one horse and riding another means moving from one condition to another. The difference between the two conditions depends on the difference between the two horses.
Riding a horse while holding a spear and attacking people may symbolize insisting on asking people for help or begging persistently. Riding with weapons may indicate strength, authority and protection from enemies.
Riding a horse without a saddle or bridle is usually cautionary. It may point to uncontrolled actions, unstable responsibilities, sinful behavior or entering a relationship or task without proper discipline.
Buying, selling or losing a horse
Buying a horse is generally interpreted as goodness, benefit, honor and rank. Buying a horse from the market may indicate promotion, especially for someone in public duty.
If a person buys a horse or donkey and counts or turns over coins in his hand, he may receive good because of something he says, since money is sometimes interpreted as speech in dream symbolism.
Selling a horse is usually less favorable. It may indicate leaving a job by one’s own choice, quarrel, or difficulty in family life. Selling one’s horse can also symbolize giving up a position or source of honor.
A stolen, lost or dead horse carries warning meanings. It may indicate loss of work, illness, a family matter, or hardship affecting one’s wife or livelihood.
Daniel, Kirmani and other Islamic scholars
According to the interpretation attributed to Daniel, seeing a horse points to honor and position. Any deficiency in the horse’s equipment indicates a deficiency in honor. A long tail or increased tail hair symbolizes more helpers and supporters.
Riding a winged horse and flying may point to honor in this world and the Hereafter, or to a journey. Riding a two-winged horse may indicate attaining one’s desire and gaining high rank.
Kirmani says that riding a beautiful horse with saddle and bridle, moving calmly, indicates great honor. Completing missing equipment on a horse means that the dreamer’s condition improves.
Cabir al-Maghribi interprets the horse as a sign of temperament. A gentle horse indicates a calm person, while an unruly horse reflects an unruly or difficult nature. This shows that the horse may represent not only outer status but also inner character.
Is dreaming of a horse good or bad?
Dreaming of a horse is often favorable, especially when the horse is beautiful, calm, strong, saddled, bridled, white, black or gray. Such dreams may indicate rank, honor, provision, marriage, children, travel, protection and victory over enemies.
However, a wild, uncontrolled, saddleless, bridgeless, stolen, lost, weak or dead horse may carry warnings. It may point to disorder, loss of rank, family difficulty, health trouble, unstable affairs or a harmful relationship.
Riding a horse may mean elevation and the approach of one’s wish. Falling from a horse may indicate loss. Changing horses means a change in condition. Buying a horse points to goodness and rank, while selling a horse may indicate separation from work or conflict.
Islamic dream interpretations are symbolic explanations, not certain rulings. Allah knows best. Allah knows best. A horse dream should be read as an invitation to reflect on honor, ambition, livelihood, family life, travel, enemies, discipline, character and one’s relationship with worldly status.
