A spiritual, symbolic, and psychological look into the world of dreams

Throughout history, dreams have captivated the minds of prophets, scholars, and ordinary people alike. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is reported to have said: "Dreams are of three kinds: those that come from Allah and bring glad tidings, those that are from Satan and sow despair, and those that are confused and meaningless." This tripartite classification has become a foundation in Islamic dream theory, later elaborated by many great interpreters.

Prophets and scholars offer structured typologies of dreams

Prophet Daniel (a.s) divided dreams into two main categories:

  1. Informative dreams, reflecting current circumstances

  2. Foretelling dreams, indicating future events

These are further subdivided into four types:

  • Commanding dreams

  • Preventive dreams

  • Warning dreams

  • Announcing (glad tidings) dreams

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s) classified dreams as:

  • Clear (muhkam): with direct meanings

  • Allegorical (mutashabih): requiring interpretation

  • Chaotic (adhghāth ahlām): meaningless, often seen by four groups:

    • Morally corrupt individuals

    • Those who sleep intoxicated

    • People who eat heavy, indigestible food (like eggplant, vinegar, lentils)

    • Children before puberty

True dreams are spiritual insights from divine sources

According to scholars like Ibn Sirin and Jabir al-Maghribi, true dreams are shown by angels dispatched from the Preserved Tablet (Lawh al-Mahfuz). These angels either warn the dreamer about sins or offer good news, depending on divine will.

Jabir divides true dreams into three types:

  1. Glad tidings: signals from angels about future blessings

  2. Warnings: visions that expose sinful paths

  3. Inspirational dreams: messages guiding the dreamer toward repentance, obedience, and righteousness

False dreams are also threefold:

  • Wishful thoughts (himmah): based on daytime preoccupations

  • Illness-based dreams (illat): products of physical suffering or fever

  • Satanic delusions: chaotic and misleading

Dreams often defy logic and open windows to the unseen

Imam Ali (a.s) said: “Among the most wondrous creations of God are dreams — both good and bad.” Ibn Sirin notes that people may dream of events that later happen in detail. Some meet individuals in dreams and then encounter them in real life. In other cases, illiterate people may utter deep, philosophical truths while dreaming.

Jabir adds that dreamers sometimes speak foreign languages in their sleep, explaining complex concepts they cannot recall upon waking. Kirmani agrees, emphasizing that some dreams manifest literally, exactly as seen.

The soul, spirit, and their role in dreaming remain debated

The Qur’an states: “It is Allah who takes the souls at the time of death and those that do not die during their sleep...” (Qur’an 39:42). Based on this, some scholars argue that the soul (nafs) leaves the body during sleep, traveling the skies by divine permission and returning after gaining insight.

Others dispute this, arguing that if the soul truly left the body, breathing and movement wouldn’t be possible during sleep. Philosophers compare the soul to the sun and its light: distinct, yet inseparable. Islamic theologians affirm that “the soul is a matter of the unseen, known only to your Lord” (Qur’an 17:85).
