Sleep: The body's most essential yet least understood process
Sleep is a natural biological function that allows the body and brain to rest and recover. While it may seem simple — just close your eyes and drift off — sleep is one of the most complex and mysterious physiological processes known to science. Despite centuries of research, modern medicine still doesn’t fully understand exactly how and why we sleep.
When we lack quality sleep, we feel it — mentally, physically, and emotionally. Without enough restorative rest, your body and brain cannot perform properly. In fact, sleep disorders are so prevalent that there's now an entire field of medicine devoted to diagnosing and treating them.
Why do we sleep? A puzzle science has yet to solve
Experts compare the science of sleep to a partially assembled jigsaw puzzle. We have many pieces, and a sense of the bigger picture, but the full image still escapes us.
Sleep is not simply a matter of “switching off.” Instead, it's a state in which energy use declines, physical repair accelerates, and the brain performs essential tasks such as memory consolidation and information sorting — much like a librarian organizing books after closing hours.

Is it necessary to get all your sleep at once? Not always
Continuous nighttime sleep isn’t the only valid pattern. Some cultures have long practiced biphasic or polyphasic sleep — splitting rest into multiple segments. Napping traditions such as the Spanish siesta or Japan’s inemuri are culturally embedded.
However, excessive or long naps may interfere with nighttime sleep quality and could signal an underlying health issue. Short naps (20–30 minutes) can be beneficial if used wisely and consistently.
The stages of sleep: More than just rest
Sleep is divided into non-REM (NREM) and REM (rapid eye movement) phases, cycling every 90–120 minutes:
