The Sacred Science of Dream Interpretation: A Divine Legacy Through the Ages

Dream interpretation, known in Islamic tradition as Ta’bir al-Ru’ya, is not merely symbolic reading—it is a sacred discipline bestowed upon the chosen. According to Islamic belief, this science was granted to Prophet Joseph (Yusuf) by God, as mentioned explicitly in the Qur'an:
"Thus did We establish Joseph in the land, that We might teach him the interpretation of dreams." (Qur’an 12:21)

The science holds a revered place in both scripture and tradition, where dreams are not random occurrences but divinely inspired messages for those with spiritual perception.

Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) first revelation came through a dream

Islamic narration states that the first divine communication to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) came through a dream, in which an angel greeted him with glad tidings. According to Ibn Abbas, the angel said: "O Muhammad, rejoice! God has chosen you above all prophets and granted you the knowledge of the unseen." This moment is widely considered the gateway to his prophethood.

Khadija, the Prophet’s wife, upon hearing the dream, affirmed: “Glad tidings to you, O Muhammad. There is goodness and future in this vision.”

Righteous dreams are considered a form of divine warning

Islamic scholars describe dreams as a divine form of guidance, especially for the believers. Ibn Abbas narrates from Prophet Solomon:
"A truthful dream is God’s way of warning His believing servant before good or evil reaches him, so he may not be deceived by worldly temptation and may remain mindful of God."

Imam Ali (AS) is also reported to have said: “When a believer sees a dream, he should understand its interpretation to benefit from it; and if the dream is disturbing, he should protect himself through prayer, worship, and charity.”

Not every science equals dream interpretation in depth and breadth

Renowned interpreter Ibn Sirin emphasized that whoever masters this science masters all sciences, due to its multifaceted nature. He explained that dream interpretation isn’t based solely on analogy. It requires deep understanding of the dreamer’s spiritual state, cultural context, astrological factors, language, and even poetry.

The dream can carry different meanings depending on whether the dreamer is male or female, pious or sinful, young or old. Thus, dream interpretation becomes a holistic, intuitive, and spiritually nuanced art.

Interpreters must combine piety, insight, and scholarship

A qualified dream interpreter is not only well-versed in Qur’anic symbols and Prophetic traditions but also must possess high moral character and spiritual clarity. They should abstain from sin, impure speech, and ill-gotten wealth. Without divine aid and spiritual refinement, dream interpretation risks becoming misguided speculation.

As the text beautifully concludes:
"May God grant this knowledge to those whose essence is pure from sin and corruption, and may He make them inheritors of the prophets."
