Dreaming of clothes in Islam: colors, status and livelihood meanings

By Bilge Türk | Dreams Wisdom
ANKARA, Türkiye — Dreaming of clothes is interpreted in Islamic dream literature as a sign of faith, livelihood, honor, rank, marriage, deeds, wealth and one’s visible condition before people.

Clothing is not only a physical covering in dream interpretation. It also represents how a person appears to others, what they conceal, what they carry spiritually and how their worldly affairs are shaped. For this reason, the meaning changes greatly depending on whether the garment is new or old, clean or dirty, white or green, red or black, torn or sewn, wide or narrow, simple or luxurious. Classical scholars also connect clothing with religion, worldly status, work, income, marriage, reputation, secrets, repentance and moral conduct.

General meaning of clothes in a dream

In general, seeing clothes in a dream points to a person’s outer state and inner condition. A clean, new, beautiful and suitable garment is usually interpreted positively. It may indicate good faith, improved livelihood, honor, social respect, marriage, lawful benefit, comfort in daily life and good deeds.

An old, dirty, torn, stained, inappropriate or revealing garment is more cautionary. It may suggest sorrow, poverty, exposure of secrets, moral weakness, unlawful wealth, loss of dignity, strained relationships or corruption in one’s worldly and spiritual affairs.

The color of the garment is also important. White clothes often point to piety and dignity. Green clothes are linked with faith, righteousness and spiritual goodness. Black clothes may be good for judges, preachers and rulers, but can indicate grief for ordinary people. Yellow clothes are interpreted by some scholars as illness or religious negligence, while red clothes can be linked with joy in some sources and arrogance in others.

Imam Jafar al-Sadiq: seven meanings of clothing

According to Imam Jafar al-Sadiq, seeing clothes in a dream has seven main interpretations: pure faith, wealth, honor and rank, benefit, ease in livelihood, deeds and justice.

This interpretation shows that clothes symbolize both the inner and outer life of the dreamer. A clean garment may point to purity of belief. A fine garment may indicate dignity, rank and social acceptance. Comfortable clothing may suggest ease in livelihood, while the idea of “deeds” shows that clothing can represent what a person does and how those actions cover or expose them.

Imam Jafar al-Sadiq also gives four meanings for wearing new clothes: woman, judge, wealth, and goodness with benefit. Therefore, new clothing may point to marriage, a new responsibility, an increase in property or a beneficial new phase in life.

Seeing oneself cutting a garment with scissors is interpreted as obtaining something. However, seeing thieves remove one’s clothes may indicate discord between wives if the dreamer has more than one spouse.

Prophet Daniel: clothing as work and earnings

According to Prophet Daniel, clothing is closely connected with work and earnings. Seeing that one has a beautiful garment means that one’s work and income will be good. Seeing a bad garment indicates that one’s work and livelihood may become troubled.

A red garment is interpreted as happiness and devotion in worship. A green garment is especially meaningful because it is associated with the garments of Paradise. In this sense, wearing green may point to faith, piety and spiritual honor.

A washed white garment indicates that people’s affairs are in good order. A purple garment points to loss or harm. A torn garment suggests that a secret may be revealed. Woolen and felt garments may indicate obtaining wealth and reaching one’s aim.

Local or regional clothing is interpreted as poverty in some sources. Dirty clothes point to sorrow and distress. Paper clothing indicates humiliation. Clothes made from animal hides may mean goodness and benefit. Seamless clothes resembling a shroud are interpreted more seriously, as a sign that one’s religious duty may be ending and that life may be approaching its final stage. A garment made from donkey hide is interpreted as honor and rank.

Allama Majlisi and the author: marriage, piety and old clothes

Allama Majlisi connects clothing with marriage. Seeing clothes in a dream may indicate marriage or a change in family life. White clothing means becoming a religious and respected person. Green clothing points to piety. A heavenly garment indicates elevation and spiritual rise.

Yellow clothing is interpreted by Allama Majlisi as abandoning prayer. This makes the dream a warning about worship, discipline and one’s spiritual condition. If a garment becomes impure or dirty, it may indicate unlawful wealth.

The author states that wearing old clothes means sorrow and distress. However, other sources make an important distinction: wearing old clothes is negative, but removing old clothes can be positive. In this sense, an old garment may symbolize a burden, poverty, sadness or an old condition that still clings to the dreamer.

If the dreamer takes off the old garment, the meaning changes toward relief, escape from hardship and leaving poverty behind.

Ibn Sirin: dirty, old and seasonal clothes

According to Ibn Sirin, possessing dirty clothes suggests corruption or being a disruptive person. If one’s garment becomes stained with dirt or filth, it indicates corruption in both worldly and spiritual affairs.

If the dirt on the garment comes from dead creatures, the interpretation is more specific: the dreamer’s worldly condition may be sound, but the state of the hereafter may be corrupt. This shows how strongly classical interpreters connected clothing with moral and spiritual reality.

Removing old clothes is interpreted as being freed from poverty and distress. The old garment represents hardship, burden and sorrow; removing it suggests a new phase.

Wearing winter clothes in summer indicates an increase in wealth equal to the value of the garment. Wearing summer clothes in winter, however, is interpreted as fear. Clothing that does not match the season may symbolize acting without preparation or being out of step with the conditions of life.

Kirmani: professional garments and social position

Kirmani gives detailed interpretations based on the type of garment. Wearing clothes suitable to one’s dignity indicates career advancement. Wearing royal garments means that one’s affairs will become orderly. Wearing the garment of a vizier indicates gaining much wealth, though people may criticize the dreamer.

Wearing the clothing of an ascetic means becoming someone trusted by people and receiving their deposits or responsibilities. Wearing a merchant’s garment indicates good work and income. Wearing the clothing of righteous people points to sound faith, while wearing the clothing of corrupt people indicates trouble from them.

Doctor’s clothing suggests that one’s affairs will become good and that the dreamer may become known among people. Executioner’s clothing points to benefit. Worker’s clothing indicates sorrow and distress. Prisoner’s clothing suggests hardship because of a certain matter and possible poverty.

Wearing women’s clothing may indicate separation from a respected relative or friend. Elegant clothing may point to meeting a woman for marriage. New and unwashed clothing is generally good. Sewn clothing indicates goodness and benefit. Revealing clothing points to sin.

Jabir al-Maghribi: religion and worldly life

Jabir al-Maghribi says that clothing has two main interpretations: one related to religion and the other to worldly life. A clean, new white garment indicates that both religion and the hereafter are in good condition. A torn and dirty garment indicates corruption in both worlds.

Red clothing is good for both men and women. Black clothing is good for preachers, judges and rulers, but may indicate grief for ordinary people. Dark clothing points to sorrow and calamity. Cloaks, turbans and similar garments may indicate distress for men in certain contexts.

Yellow clothing indicates illness for men. For women, it may point to marriage; for married women, it may indicate the husband’s illness. Green clothing is interpreted as religious faith for both men and women.

Seeing green clothing on a living person indicates the goodness of that person’s faith. Seeing green clothing on a deceased person indicates happiness in the hereafter for that person.

Wearing the garment of a scholar means benefiting from scholars. Wearing the garment of an ascetic means not caring much for worldly wealth. Wearing rich clothing may indicate attachment to worldly possessions. Wearing Jewish or Christian clothing may indicate sympathy toward those paths.

Ismail Ash‘ath: torn garments, lost clothes and travel

According to Ismail Ash‘ath, seeing a garment whose front is one color and back is another color indicates losing respect among people and being humiliated. Eating or gnawing one’s own garment suggests spending a large amount from one’s own wealth.

Wearing underclothes may indicate staying for a long time during a journey or being imprisoned because of a matter. If one’s garment is lost or taken away and the dreamer is left naked, it indicates loss of dignity.

If someone tears the dreamer’s clothing, it may point to a problem with the spouse and resulting sadness. If the garment is torn generally, it may indicate conflict with a relative or friend. If someone takes the garment away and the dreamer remains naked, it indicates loss of honor.

Opening a folded garment points to travel. Folding an open garment may indicate the return of a missing or long-absent relative. For a man, wearing women’s clothing may indicate an increase in wealth but also great fear. For a woman, wearing men’s clothing indicates goodness and benefit.

Finding clothes may indicate travel, and the length of the garment may show whether the journey will be long or short. Completing a garment one has begun sewing indicates relief from sorrow.

Isfahani: fabrics, silk and old garments

According to Isfahani, the best garment in interpretation is one made of cotton and without silk. Cotton suggests simplicity, purity and a more lawful form of livelihood.

Garments made of silk, cotton or marten fur are interpreted in some contexts as wealth gained unlawfully. Colored or raw silk garments are considered negative for men but positive for women. This shows that classical interpretation often considers gender, social role and material together.

Seeing old clothes indicates distress caused by a person of authority. Buying or wearing old clothes is negative. Selling old clothes or removing them is positive. The central meaning is leaving behind burdens, old grief and a difficult condition.

Washed clothing also has a strong positive meaning. Jabir al-Maghribi interprets wearing washed clothes as repentance from sins. Dirty clothes may indicate poverty. Colorful clothes are good for women and military people. Elegant clothes, in some interpretations, may be negative depending on context.

Modern interpretations: colors, promises and social life

Modern interpreters give additional meanings to clothing dreams. Wearing golden clothing may indicate making a promise that is not very serious but still fulfilling it. Seeing gold-embroidered clothing points to happiness, dignity and respect. Possessing such a garment indicates a profitable transaction. Wearing it, however, may indicate loss in business and difficult days.

Having a beautiful garment suggests good relations with others. Wearing expensive clothes indicates good fortune. Wearing white clothing points to respect and dignity. Wearing blue clothing indicates happiness. Wearing red clothing may point to pride. Wearing yellow clothing may indicate hypocrisy. Wearing green clothing means that a wish may be fulfilled. Wearing black clothing may indicate mourning.

Washing clothes suggests thrift. Tearing clothes points to sudden anger. Wearing dirty clothes may indicate small and not very visible progress in business or trade. Burning clothes may suggest betrayal or being falsely accused.

Final interpretation of clothes in a dream

Dreaming of clothes is one of the broadest symbols in Islamic dream interpretation. Clean, new, white, green, suitable and well-made garments generally point to goodness, pure faith, comfortable livelihood, rank, marriage, benefit, good deeds and dignity.

Dirty, torn, old, impure, narrow, revealing or lost garments are more cautionary. They may indicate sorrow, sin, exposed secrets, poverty, unlawful wealth, loss of dignity, damaged reputation or corruption in worldly and spiritual affairs.

The most important question is whether the garment suits the dreamer. Suitable clothing points to honor and good condition; unsuitable clothing may indicate hardship or imbalance. Removing old clothes means relief from distress. Completing a sewn garment means the end of sorrow. Opening a folded garment points to travel, while folding an open garment can indicate the return of someone absent.

In summary, clothing in a dream represents both the visible and hidden state of a person. Its cleanliness may reflect faith, its color may show mood or spiritual condition, its tear may reveal secrets, its newness may show change, and its dirt may warn about earnings or deeds. For this reason, the garment’s color, fabric, condition, owner and the dreamer’s feeling must all be considered together.
