NEW YORK, USA — Seeing lips in a dream is interpreted as a sign connected with children, spouse, relatives, speech, livelihood and secrets, while the condition of the lips changes the meaning.
In Islamic dream interpretation, lips are not viewed only as a physical feature. They are connected with how a person speaks, what they hide, whom they rely on, how they earn, and how they relate to family and close companions. The upper lip, lower lip, lip color, pain, cutting, swelling, dryness or beauty each carries a different meaning.
General meaning of lips in a dream
Seeing lips in a dream generally points to speech, expression, relatives, spouse, children, livelihood and hidden matters. Since lips are used for speaking, eating, drinking and expressing emotion, classical interpreters often connect them with both personal relationships and the dreamer’s inner life.
Beautiful, healthy and well-shaped lips are usually interpreted positively. They may indicate effective speech, kind relatives, helpful friends and a good reputation among people. A dreamer who sees clean and balanced lips may be listened to, respected and understood more clearly by those around them.
However, lips that are cut, painful, pale, dark, sealed or distorted may point to sorrow, family problems, loss of support, difficulty in communication or weakening of relationships. The exact interpretation depends on what happens to the lips in the dream.
Imam Jafar al-Sadiq’s interpretation
According to Imam Jafar al-Sadiq, lips in a dream are interpreted through children. In this view, the upper lip points to a male child, while the lower lip points to a female child. Whatever good or bad condition appears in the lips may be reflected in matters related to children.
If the lips appear healthy, beautiful and strong, the dream may suggest goodness, well-being and strength concerning children. Thick and firm lips may point to healthy and strong offspring. Thin, weak or unhealthy-looking lips may indicate concern, weakness or sensitivity related to children.
This interpretation gives special importance to whether the dream concerns the upper or lower lip. A problem in the upper lip may be connected with a son, while a problem in the lower lip may be connected with a daughter. For this reason, the details of the dream are essential.
Ibn Sirin’s interpretation of lips
According to Ibn Sirin, seeing lips in a dream may indicate that the dreamer’s desired matters will be fulfilled. In this sense, lips are connected with wishes, expectations and news that the dreamer hopes to receive.
If the lips are present, normal and healthy, the dream may point to the realization of a goal. The dreamer may receive an answer, complete a matter or see progress in something they have wanted for a long time.
However, seeing that one has no lips carries a more difficult meaning. Ibn Sirin interprets this as a sign of decrease in wealth and, in some narrations, the death of the spouse. The absence of lips may also suggest losing support, losing one’s ability to express oneself or experiencing a break in close relationships.
Seeing the lips cut is interpreted as separation from one’s spouse or divorce. This may point to a serious break in family life, a difficult decision in marriage or emotional distance between partners.
Kirmani’s interpretation: pain, sealing and weakness
According to Kirmani, seeing pain in the lips means sorrow. Lip pain may symbolize sadness caused by speech, family matters, friends or close relationships. The dreamer may be hurt by words, silence or misunderstandings.
Seeing the lips stuck together so tightly that they cannot open indicates that matters may become difficult. It may suggest that the dreamer’s affairs are blocked, delayed or complicated. If the dreamer wants to speak but cannot, the meaning becomes stronger and may point to distress, helplessness or a serious obstacle.
Kirmani also interprets the falling of both lips as sorrow related to the mother or father. In some narrations, it may also warn the dreamer against hypocrisy, slander or harmful speech.
Seeing an ugly defect on the lips is interpreted as worry and sadness. Loose or weak lips may indicate helplessness, loss of strength or inability to manage a situation properly.
Lip color in dreams
Lip color is one of the most important details in interpretation. Red lips are generally positive when they appear natural and beautiful. They may indicate effective speech, accepted words and pleasant expression. If the redness of the lips increases, the dreamer’s words may become more influential and more widely heard.
A black mole on the lips has different meanings for men and women. According to Kirmani, if a woman sees a mole on her lip, it may indicate honor, dignity and rank. If a man sees the same dream, it may point to increase in wealth.
Yellow lips are interpreted as sorrow, fear, weakness or illness. Pale lips may indicate cooling in love or friendship. Green or white lips may point to sadness caused by friends. Black lips may indicate that a matter from which the dreamer expected relief may instead bring worry or disappointment.
Blue or dark lips have a more serious interpretation in some classical sources, especially for a sick person. In that context, they may be read as a sign of severe illness or the approach of death. For a healthy person, they may point to distress, weakness in argument or difficulty in livelihood.
Nabulsi’s interpretation of lips
According to Nabulsi, lips in a dream may represent a person whom the dreamer is proud of, someone who helps them, or a close friend through whom they gain honor. Lips may also symbolize eloquence and the power of expression.
Nabulsi considers the lower lip more virtuous than the upper lip. The upper lip is interpreted as a trusted friend whom the dreamer relies on in their affairs. The lower and upper lips may also stand for spouse, children and relatives.
If the dreamer feels pain or soreness in the lips, this may indicate that the affairs of friends are not going well. Seeing the lip cut may point to harmful speech, gossip or causing damage through words.
If the upper lip is separated from its place, it may indicate loss of blessing. If the lower lip is separated, it may indicate the death of the wife or separation from her. A split upper lip may be interpreted as two friends, while a split lower lip may be interpreted as two wives. If the split heals, relationships may improve. If the split lip is cut, those connections may break.
Nabulsi also connects lips with doorkeepers, guards, doors, locks, knowledge, guidance, food, drink, joy, sorrow and keeping secrets. This makes the lip dream broad in meaning, covering social life, protection, speech and hidden matters.
Molla Cami’s interpretation
According to Molla Cami, lips in a dream point to a helper, a respected friend or someone through whom the dreamer gains honor. Lips also represent the strength of speech and the ability to explain things clearly.
The lower lip is considered better than the upper lip. The upper lip may represent a trusted friend, while the lower lip may represent stronger support and closer benefit.
Pain in the lips indicates that friendship-related matters may not be going well. If the lips disappear, it may suggest losing guards, protectors or those who serve as a barrier against harm. In some interpretations, it may also symbolize a broken lock or a lost key.
Thin and red lips indicate correct speech, the right path and pleasant food or drink. Blue lips may indicate foolishness, inability to bring evidence in a dispute or difficulty in livelihood.
Sayyid Suleyman’s interpretation
According to Sayyid Suleyman, lips are the dreamer’s helpers. Some interpreters also explain lips as relatives. In this view, the upper lip represents male relatives, while the lower lip represents female relatives.
Seeing the upper lip cut or removed points to the loss of blessing and wealth. Seeing the same condition in the lower lip may indicate the death of the wife or separation from her. Seeing both lips fall may point to great sorrow related to the mother or father.
Moistening the lips with saliva is interpreted as a sign of enmity that may arise among family or relatives. If the dreamer has no family, the harm may concern the dreamer personally.
Seeing one or both lips resemble metal is not interpreted favorably. Marks such as tattoos or needle-like markings on the lips are also generally considered negative in this tradition.
Diyanet-style interpretation
In Diyanet-style interpretation, seeing lips in a dream is linked with kinship. The upper lip represents the male side, while the lower lip represents the female side. If the upper lip is cut or removed, it may indicate a decrease in blessing and wealth. If the lower lip is cut or removed, it may point to the death of the spouse or separation from her.
Seeing an ugly defect on the lips means sorrow. Seeing the lips stuck together indicates that matters may become difficult. Wanting to speak but being unable to do so points to hardship or trial.
If a woman sees a mole on her lip, it may mean that she is loved or respected. If a man sees the same dream, it may indicate abundance of wealth. Red lips point to accepted and influential speech. Yellow lips indicate sorrow, fear and illness. Black lips suggest that a hoped-for matter may not be fulfilled.
Contemporary interpretations
Contemporary interpreters often connect red, smiling or laughing lips with good fortune, friendship and warm social relations. Such a dream may suggest that the dreamer will experience pleasant communication or receive kindness from people around them.
Pale lips may indicate cooling in love or friendship. Twisted or bitten lips may suggest trouble caused by jealousy, hatred, hostility or resentment from others.
Seeing lips with lipstick may point to a problem involving a woman or a misunderstanding in social relationships. This dream may remind the dreamer to speak carefully, avoid unnecessary conflict and pay attention to how words are received.

Kirmani connects lip pain with sadness and sealed lips with blocked affairs. Nabulsi and Molla Cami interpret lips as helpers, trusted friends, speech, doors, locks and hidden matters.
