Dreams as a Spiritual Bridge to the Departed
In Islamic tradition, dreams are not only seen as symbols but also as a channel of spiritual communication. For those wishing to see their deceased loved ones in dreams, narrations from classical sources prescribe certain practices. These rituals require both physical and spiritual preparation, sincere intention, and turning wholeheartedly to God.
The Tasbih of Lady Fatima and a Special Supplication
According to Felahu’s-Sail, anyone who wishes to see a deceased person in their dream should cleanse themselves, lie on their right side, recite once the Tasbih of Lady Fatima, and then read a special supplication. This prayer highlights God’s indescribable majesty and calls upon the intercession of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Imam Ali, Lady Fatima, and Hasan and Husayn. Through this plea, the dreamer asks God to reveal their loved one in the state in which they currently exist. Tradition holds that those who perform this practice may, by God’s permission, see their loved one in a dream.
Seven Surahs Over Seven Nights
Other narrations recommend that before sleeping, one should be pure and clean, face the Qibla, lie on the right side, and recite seven times each of the following chapters: Ash-Shams, Al-Layl, Al-Kafirun, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas. Afterward, the dreamer should say the name of the person they wish to see, praying: “O Allah, show me this person in my dream.” The supplication is then completed with: “Grant me relief and a way out in my affairs.” Repeated for seven consecutive nights, this ritual is said to guarantee the dreamer an encounter with their departed loved one.
A Source of Comfort and Hope
For those who grieve, these spiritual practices are not merely rituals but profound sources of solace. To see a departed relative in a dream offers comfort, reassurance, and a sense of continued connection. Islamic scholars emphasize that such dreams are a divine gift, providing peace to the heart and strength to the soul.
Modern Perspectives and Faith
Psychologists today interpret these rituals as ways of shaping the subconscious. When combined with strong faith, they may increase the likelihood of seeing a loved one in dreams. Yet, for believers, the experience is more than psychological—it is regarded as a divine sign and a blessing from the Almighty.
