A Vision in the Early Years of Osman Gazi

Osman Gazi (1254–1324), the founder of the Ottoman Empire, entered history not only as a warrior and leader but also as a dreamer whose vision foretold the rise of one of the world’s most enduring empires. Chroniclers of the early Ottoman period often trace the origins of the dynasty to a dream he experienced during his youth, a vision so profound that it came to symbolize the divine foundation of the empire.

The Night at Sheikh Edebali’s Lodge

In his twenties, Osman spent a night at the lodge of Sheikh Edebali, a respected Sufi leader. Out of reverence, he took a Qur’an from a shelf and read it for nearly six hours, only to fall asleep with the holy book resting in his lap. It was in this sacred moment of slumber that he dreamed a vision destined to shape centuries of history.

The Dream: From Crescent to Mighty Tree

In his dream, a crescent moon rose from Sheikh Edebali’s chest, transforming into a radiant full moon that entered Osman’s own chest. From him then grew a vast plane tree, its roots spreading into the great rivers of the world—Tigris, Euphrates, Nile, and Danube.

The tree’s branches stretched across the Atlas, Balkan, Caucasus, and Taurus mountains, covering the entire world. Its leaves cast shadows over fertile valleys where golden-domed mosques gleamed and minarets echoed with the call to prayer. A breeze suddenly turned the leaves toward Istanbul, shining like a precious gem at the crossroads of two seas and two continents.

Sheikh Edebali’s Interpretation: A Divine Mandate

Upon awakening, Osman immediately shared his dream with Sheikh Edebali. The Sheikh interpreted it as a divine sign:

“O son, God has granted you and your descendants the destiny of a world empire. The light that passed from me to you is this promise. From your noble line will come rulers who unite nations and bring people under one banner.”

He also gave timeless counsel:

  • “Know your past so you may step firmly into the future.”

  • “Ease will be ours, hardship will be yours.”

  • “Choose your companions wisely, for they will determine how far you reach.”

These words became both a spiritual prophecy and a guiding principle for the Ottoman dynasty, which went on to rule for over six centuries across three continents.

The Legacy of a Dream

Historians view Osman Gazi’s vision not merely as a personal revelation but as the symbolic birth of a civilization. The image of the great tree spreading across the world encapsulated the empire’s role as a unifying force, while the turning of its leaves toward Istanbul foreshadowed the city’s destiny as the capital of an empire.

The dream thus remains an enduring reminder that history often begins not with armies, but with visions.
