What does seeing a tongue in a dream mean? Detailed Islamic interpretations

ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Seeing a tongue in a dream is interpreted by Islamic dream scholars as a powerful symbol of a person's communication power, inner world, and social standing, acting as a harbinger of both great success and irreparable mistakes.

Islamic scholars and contemporary interpreters detail the physical state of the tongue—whether it elongates, is cut, or changes shape—across a wide spectrum, from the dreamer's professional and family life to their spirituality and hidden secrets.

General and symbolic meaning of seeing a tongue in a dream

According to Islamic sources and traditional dream interpretations, the tongue is the human's spokesperson, representative, translator, mediator, source of pride, and fount of truth. Therefore, the tongue seen in a dream is considered the translator of the owner's intentions and the main element that manages their affairs. However, the tongue is also the place where humans make the most mistakes. Because of this, it is stated that a person who dreams of moving their tongue may fall into an error if they are not careful with their words in daily life.

According to general interpretations, the tongue represents beauty, the evidence a person defends, their course in life, and a spiritual sign. A person seeing that their tongue and pen are in place indicates that their affairs are in order. On the other hand, the tongue can also point to a servant hired to manage a family's affairs, a worker, a nanny, or sometimes a foul-tempered neighbor. People who uncover hidden things, inspection officers, or prison guards are also associated with the tongue symbol in dreams.

The tongue in dreams according to Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq and Prophet Daniel (a.s)

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s), one of the prominent Islamic scholars, interpreted seeing a tongue in a dream based on six different fundamental concepts. These interpretations are, respectively; wisdom, riyaset (management and leadership), translation, hacet (meeting needs), delil (the element that proves rightfulness), and the ability to speak various languages.

Prophet Daniel (a.s), on the other hand, focused on the physical health of the tongue in the dream and the oddities that occur on it. According to Prophet Daniel:

• Healthy tongue: A person who sees their tongue as completely healthy becomes a good speaker and decisively defeats their opponents in arguments.

  
  

• Turning into a tongue: If a person sees their entire body turn into a tongue, it indicates they will experience an illness soon.

• Growing hair and fuzz: Seeing hair grow on the tongue indicates that the person will slander someone or give false testimony against them; seeing fuzz grow indicates that the person will get into trouble (commit evil) due to their own tongue and inappropriate speech.

• Growing a beard: It is reported that a person who sees a beard growing from their tongue will obtain material wealth and earnings in proportion to the size and thickness of their tongue.

Changes in the shape of the tongue in the interpretations of Ibn Sirin and Ismail Ash'as

In Ibn Sirin's interpretations, the lack or excess of the tongue is directly linked to the person's power to generate arguments. A person who sees their tongue cut or shorter than normal will become tongue-tied and helpless when trying to defend themselves or present evidence after an event. Conversely, a person who sees their tongue widen and lengthen increases their power and strengthens their evidence. However, if the tongue lengthens during a fight, it indicates that the person will utter shameless words against their adversary.

Ismail Ash'as also details the physical changes in the dream. A person who sees their tongue split into two parts (forked) will act hypocritically among the people and tell lies. Seeing that one has no tongue at all is interpreted as falling behind in some affairs and being defeated by rivals; while seeing the tongue dry up points to a generally worsening situation. Being unable to speak because the tip of the tongue is cut means that the person will handle their affairs generally by proxy, rather than personally.

Tongue and communication in the interpretations of Kirmani and Jabir al-Maghribi

Kirmani states that seeing one has two tongues in a dream points to an increase in knowledge, health, and power given by Allah. It is stated that a person who sees themselves deliberately cutting their own tongue with their hand to avoid speaking and sinning will repent from vain deeds and withdraw into spiritual seclusion. A person who thinks their tongue slipped while speaking and sees themselves saying ugly things is heralded to utter beautiful and true words that Allah approves of. Seeing someone suck your tongue indicates that knowledge and wisdom will be learned from that person.

Jabir al-Maghribi, on the other hand, interprets seeing oneself mute and dumb as corruptions occurring in both the person's religious belief and worldly life. Maghribi's other notable interpretations are as follows:

• Cutting a poor person's tongue: A person who sees themselves cutting a poor person's tongue will give that person money or a bribe to keep them quiet.

• Holding it between the teeth: A person who sees themselves holding their tongue tightly between their teeth will deny a right they have assumed or a debt entrusted to them.

Cutting, eating, and biting the tongue in a dream

If a person who has a court case sees their tongue cut in a dream, it points to their evidence being nullified and them falling into a difficult situation. However, some interpreters also interpret the cutting of the tongue as the person becoming mild, peaceful, and soft-spoken.

If an ordinary person sees themselves eating their own tongue in a dream, they will feel great regret for an inappropriate word they will say. If this person is a civil servant or an administrator, it indicates that they may unjustly consume people's wealth thanks to their tongue and oratory skills. It is stated that a person who bites their own tongue in a dream is trying to suppress their anger and control their nerves, and sometimes this dream points to a fondness for eating.

Tongue dreams according to occupational groups and status

The condition of the tongue in the dream gains different meanings depending on the occupational status of the person who sees it:

• Scholars: If a scholar sees their tongue cut, they will be defeated in a struggle and argument they enter. Sometimes this situation indicates that their student or child will fall ill.

• Civil Servants: In a dream, the cutting of a civil servant's tongue indicates their removal (dismissal) from their current duty.

• Artisans: If an artisan or business owner sees their tongue cut, they will lose their worker, partner, or servant, and may even have to sell their house.

• Poets: The cutting of a poet's tongue is interpreted as a property and blessing to be given to the poet by the person who cut that tongue.

The color of the tongue is also important. Seeing a black tongue indicates that the person will lead their nation with their tongue, but if they are a despicable person, it points to them being a liar.
