Seeking Guidance Through Scripture
According to the classical work Lafzu’l-Fevaid, narrated from Sheikh Kaf’ami (r.a.), anyone who wishes to know whether a decision or action is good or bad should recite the following Qur’anic verse:
“Do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants as allies instead of Me? Truly, We have prepared Hell as a resting place for the disbelievers.” [57]
After reciting, one should add the prayer:
اَللّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَرِني بَياضاً وَ حُمْرَةً
(O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and his family, and show me white and red.)
The seeker should then lie down facing the Qibla in a state of purity and without speaking. Insha’Allah, the dream that night will reveal whether the matter is good or harmful.
Which Days Bring True Dreams?
Sheikh Bahauddin Amuli (r.a.) explains that the accuracy of dreams differs by the day of the week:
-
Friday night: Dreams are usually false.
-
Saturday night: True and good.
-
Sunday night: True and realized quickly.
-
Monday night: Often signals injustice or hardship.
-
Tuesday night: Very good and auspicious.
-
Wednesday night: Positive, often linked to wealth and prosperity.
-
Thursday night: True dreams whose benefits manifest soon.
When Are Dreams Reliable?
The timing of the dream is equally important:
-
Early night dreams: False, with no real significance.
-
Midnight dreams: Have meaning, but may take days or months to manifest.
-
Morning dreams: Considered the truest, often realized on the same day.
A Reflection from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.)
In Bihar al-Anwar, Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) taught:
“Reflect on sleep and dreams, O Mufaddal! Notice how true and false dreams are interwoven. If all dreams were true, every person would be a prophet; if all were false, dreams would be meaningless. Sometimes dreams bring benefit by warning or guiding, sometimes they are false so that people do not rely on them entirely.”
The Imam further explained that:
-
False dreams are mixed and confused images.
-
True dreams are signs and messages.
Even true dreams divide into two:
-
Clear dreams, such as Prophet Ibrahim’s (a.s.) vision of sacrificing his son, requiring no interpretation.
-
Symbolic dreams, like Prophet Yusuf’s (a.s.) vision of the stars, sun, and moon bowing, which came true years later when his parents and brothers honored him.
